Making freight more sustainable

Ofload has planted 257 trees in Australia so far through our partnership with One Tree Planted.

Transport comprises 17% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions making it our third largest emitter. Trucks account for almost 20% of these emissions. Australia has one of the highest per capita emissions of CO2 in the world.

Inefficiency is a large contributor to truck emissions, given an average of 30% of trucks run empty. These empty kilometres are due to a gap in finding and matching return loads for carriers. To reduce this waste, and cut Australia’s CO2 emissions, we need to tackle two industry-wide issues: market dynamics and a lack of technology.

In Australia, there are more than 50,000 small carriers, with 98% of the trucking companies having fewer than 20 employees. These small companies often have trouble finding return loads for their shipments, causing them to travel empty.

Filling these empty trucks is increasingly important as road freight activity is predicted to grow by 40% to 357 billion tonne-kilometres in 2030. This prediction is based on two factors: high economic growth from Asia, one of Australia’s largest export partners; and a 20% predicted increase in Australian population which will lead to an increase in consumption.

Our mission

By matching shippers and carriers on our digital platform, we use data to increase efficiency and reduce waste. This reduction in waste will also contribute to a decrease in transport emissions. Our digital platform allows carriers to access more work by connecting them with technology to meet the demands of an increasingly digital world.

In line with our goal to reduce inefficiency and waste, we are proud to announce our partnership with One Tree Planted — an environmental charity focused on creating a healthier climate, promoting biodiversity and reforestation by planting trees. We’ll be planting one tree for every shipment to help offset the carbon emissions from our loads.
